Die Harpyie zählt zu den kraftvollsten Greifvögeln der Welt und besitzt Krallen von der Größe der Klauen eines Grizzlybären. Sie ist der Nationalvogel Panamas. Die größte Bedrohung für die Art ist die Abholzung der Wälder, da jedes Brutpaar ein weites Revier unberührten Waldes benötigt.
