Blauracke

Die Blauracke verdankt ihren englischen Namen („Roller“) den spektakulären Roll- und Sturzflügen, die Männchen während der Balz vorführen. Sie ist die einzige Rackenart Europas und einer der farbenprächtigsten Vögel des Kontinents. In weiten Teilen ihres westlichen Verbreitungsgebiets geht der Bestand durch Landwirtschaftsintensivierung und Lebensraumverlust zurück.

Virginia-Uhu

Der Virginia-Uhu ist die kraftvollste und am weitesten verbreitete Eule Amerikas und trägt daher den Beinamen Tiger des Himmels. Er zählt zu den frühesten Brutvögeln und legt seine Eier oft schon im Januar, wenn noch Schnee liegt. Der Virginia-Uhu ist ein gefürchteter Jäger, der regelmäßig Beute erlegt, die bis zu dreimal so schwer ist wie er selbst.
