About These Birds
Tooth-billed Pigeon
Unusual, stocky pigeon, 29–31 cm, with dark green and chestnut-rufous plumage and a uniquely hooked, tooth-like bill unlike any other living pigeon. Endemic to Samoa. Inhabits montane and secondary forest. Feeds on fruits and seeds on the ground and in trees. Endangered due to deforestation and cyclone damage.

Red-moustached Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus mercierii), 27 cm. Green with a red moustachial streak and orange underparts; endemic to the Marquesas Islands. Last confirmed on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. Possibly Extinct; last reliably recorded in the 1970s. Threatened by introduced rats and cats.
