Wie bei Flamingos stammt seine rosa Farbe von Carotinoid-Pigmenten aus seiner Beute an Krebstieren. Im 19. Jahrhundert wegen seiner Federn fast bis zur Ausrottung bejagt, haben sich die Bestände seither erheblich erholt.
