Breeds on coastal marshes of Alaska; winters on Pacific rocky shores from Alaska south to Baja California. Flips stones and kelp to expose invertebrates. Specialist of Pacific rocky coastlines. Long-distance migrant.

Inhabits mossy forest above 1,000 m; probes leaf litter and soft soil for invertebrates. NT. Threatened by logging and agricultural conversion of highland forest. Sedentary island endemic.
