85–97 cm. Dark brown and black with white streaking; long neck and sharp bill. Resident across South and Southeast Asia to East Africa in freshwater and estuarine habitats. Near Threatened; declining due to wetland loss and hunting. Spears fish underwater; colonial breeder.

African Darter

80–97 cm. Glossy black; chestnut neck with white lower neck stripe; white wing spots. Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa and Iraq in freshwater lakes, rivers, and swamps. Spears fish by ambush; holds wings open to dry. Breeds in mixed heronries near water.
