Sein Bestand ist seit vorindustrieller Zeit durch Eiersammlung, Ölverschmutzungen und die Konkurrenz mit der kommerziellen Fischerei um Sardinen- und Sardellenbestände um über 95 % eingebrochen.

Fiordland Penguin, 60–67 cm, breeds in the temperate rainforest of Fiordland and Stewart Island, New Zealand — highly unusual habitat for a penguin. Dark upperparts, whitish cheek streaks (3–6). Secretive breeder in coastal caves and tree roots. Piscivore. Vulnerable; threatened by introduced predators.
