Black upperparts and white underparts with a distinctive black horseshoe-shaped band across the breast. Pink patches of bare skin above the eyes help with thermoregulation.

Sein Bestand ist seit vorindustrieller Zeit durch Eiersammlung, Ölverschmutzungen und die Konkurrenz mit der kommerziellen Fischerei um Sardinen- und Sardellenbestände um über 95 % eingebrochen.

Wildlebende Wellensittiche ziehen in riesigen, nomadischen Schwärmen umher, die den Himmel verdunkeln können.
