Der Zaunkönig ist einer der kleinsten Vögel Europas, besitzt jedoch einen für seine Größe erstaunlich lauten Gesang. Männchen bauen mehrere kuppelförmige Nester, von denen das Weibchen eines zum Auspolstern auswählt. In der britischen Folklore gilt der Zaunkönig als König der Vögel, weil er den Adler in einem Flugwettbewerb überlistete.
