About These Birds

Slender-billed Prion

25–26 cm. Slenderest-billed prion; pale blue-grey with faint M-mark and narrow dark breast-side patches. Breeds Falkland Islands, Kerguelen, Crozet. Feeds mainly on copepods by surface-seizing rather than filter-feeding. Slightly longer wings give more buoyant flight.

Balearic Shearwater

30–38 cm. Brown above; variably dirty-white to brown below; often shows brown smudging on flanks. Breeds only Balearic Islands, Spain. Critically Endangered with fewer than 3,000 pairs; faces extinction. Migrates to NE Atlantic; threatened by predators, fishing bycatch, and tourist development.
