Jack Snipe: 17–19 cm, smallest and most secretive snipe with a short bill, divided supercilium, and distinctive bobbing display behaviour—rocks body rhythmically when feeding. Breeds in boreal bogs of Scandinavia and Siberia; winters in marshes from western Europe to South Asia. Insectivorous. Flushes reluctantly. Cryptic plumage.

Threatened by feral mongooses introduced for snake control and habitat loss. Sedentary island endemic. Similar to Eurasian Woodcock.
