About These Birds

Northern Bald Ibis

70–80 cm. Metallic black plumage; bare red face; long downcurved red bill; shaggy neck ruff. Critically Endangered; fewer than 1,000 birds; breeds in Morocco, Turkey (reintroduced), and parts of Middle East. Migratory; winters in Ethiopia. Ancient cultural significance; once widespread in Europe.

Roseate Spoonbill

The roseate spoonbill is the only spoonbill species in the Americas and one of the most striking wading birds in the Western Hemisphere. Like flamingos, their pink color comes from carotenoid pigments in their crustacean prey. Nearly hunted to extinction for their plumes in the 19th century, they have recovered substantially.
