Andean Snipe: 28–32 cm, large dark snipe of high Andean bogs and wet grassland from Venezuela south to Bolivia and northwestern Argentina at 2,500–5,000 m. Rich brown with buffy streaking. Probes wet soil for invertebrates. Sedentary high-altitude specialist. Crepuscular display flight. Largely sedentary.

African Snipe: 25–28 cm, medium-large snipe resident in high-altitude wetlands, bogs, and marshy grassland of eastern and southern Africa from Ethiopia and Sudan to the Cape.
