About These Birds

Sulu Bleeding-heart

Small ground dove, 22–25 cm, with brown and grey plumage and a red breast spot. Known only from the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines, with very few modern records. Inhabits lowland forest remnants. Critically Endangered (possibly Extinct) due to near-total forest loss and hunting pressure in the Sulu Islands.

Pohnpei Fruit-dove

Pohnpei Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus ponapensis), 22 cm. Green with a lilac head and an orange-yellow breast; endemic to Pohnpei, Micronesia. Occupies primary forest above 200 m on this volcanic island. Frugivore. Vulnerable; total range barely exceeds 100 km².
