About These Birds

Painted Francolin

A small Phasianidae francolin (~291 g) of rocky hillsides, scrub, and dry grassland across peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Both sexes are intricately spotted and streaked in rufous and white. Shy; detected by resonant calls. Feeds on seeds and invertebrates on the ground. Least Concern; common locally.

Crimson-headed Partridge

A distinctive Phasianidae partridge (~315 g) endemic to montane forests of Borneo, especially on Mount Kinabalu and the Crocker Range. Males bear a vivid crimson head contrasting with dark brown body plumage. Ground-dwelling; feeds on seeds and small invertebrates. Largely confined to forest above 900 m. Least Concern.
