Breeds in Mongolia and northern China; migrates to Australia via Southeast Asia, wintering on open dry grassland and stubble fields. Long-distance migrant. Insectivorous. Large flocks at staging areas.

Breeds on Arctic tundra of Canada and Alaska; migrates to South American pampas, traveling up to 25,000 km annually via transoceanic routes.
