Resident on sandy ocean beaches, estuaries, and salt-lake margins throughout Australia. Insectivorous. Sedentary with local movements. Nests above high-tide mark; vulnerable to beach recreation disturbance.

Breeds on Arctic tundra of Canada and Alaska; migrates to South American pampas, traveling up to 25,000 km annually via transoceanic routes.
