About These Birds

Greater Sandplover

Greater Sandplover: 22–25 cm, large stocky plover with a heavier bill than Siberian Sandplover, broad rufous breast-band, and greenish-grey legs. Breeds on semi-desert and stony steppe from Turkey east to Mongolia; winters on tropical coasts from East Africa to Australia. Feeds on invertebrates on sandy beaches and mudflats. Long-distance migrant.

Spot-breasted Lapwing

Spot-breasted Lapwing: 28–30 cm, Ethiopian highland endemic lapwing with a black head and breast spotted white, and red legs. Restricted to high-altitude moorland and montane grassland above 1,800 m in Ethiopia. Insectivorous. Sedentary; rare and little-studied. Declining due to overgrazing and agricultural encroachment.
