Coastal resident on sandy beaches and estuaries of South China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and surrounding southeast Asian coasts. Insectivorous. Threatened by beach development and disturbance. NT.

Widespread resident across sub-Saharan Africa near freshwater margins, mudflats, and reservoir edges. Feeds on invertebrates by pecking. Year-round resident with local movements during dry season.
