About These Birds

Liverpool Pigeon

Extinct island pigeon, known from a single specimen in the World Museum Liverpool and a painting. Believed to have inhabited Pacific islands, possibly the Marquesas or Society Islands, based on morphology. Dark grey with white spots. Extinct; likely died out in the 18th or 19th century from hunting and introduced predators.

African Collared-dove

Small dove, 26–29 cm, pale pinkish-grey with a black hindneck collar and white tail corners. Native to arid zones of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Somalia and south to Tanzania. The ancestor of the domesticated Barbary Dove (ring-necked dove). Granivore of grass seeds and small grains in dry savanna, farmland, and desert edge. Least Concern.
