A medium-large Phasianidae pheasant (~1.04 kg) confined to subtropical montane forests of southeastern China. Males display white-barred chestnut wings and a striking patterned tail. Forages on the ground for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Locally common in protected areas; Least Concern.

Male with white-barred dark brown wings forming bold pattern; rich chestnut breast; grey rump; long barred tail; red facial skin. Female mottled brown and buff with white belly; lacks bold wing markings.

Endemic to southeastern China (Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Hunan); resident of subtropical broadleaf forest on slopes below 1,800 m.

Song
Sharp, staccato 'kak-kak-kah' crowing call from Chinese broadleaf forest; higher and more emphatic than Reeves's Pheasant. Alarm is a loud explosive cackle with wing-beating. Contact clucks are low.
