About
The Nankeen Night-Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus), also known as the Rufous Night-Heron, is the most widespread night-heron in Australasia and the Pacific, and the only night-heron native to Australia. Adults display a distinctive and handsome plumage: the upperparts — crown, back, and wings — are rich rufous-brown to chestnut, contrasting with a white to pale buff underside and a black bill. The face is pale with large dark red eyes adapted for nocturnal vision. In breeding plumage adults develop two or three long white plumes from the nape. Total length is 55–65 cm, and the species is similar in build to the Black-crowned Night-Heron but with the rufous replacing the gray upperparts.
The Nankeen Night-Heron has a wide distribution spanning from the Cocos Islands and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands east through Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, Australia, and into the Pacific Islands, including New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and many smaller island groups. In Australia it occurs across the continent wherever suitable wetland habitats exist. Multiple subspecies are recognized across this large range, varying in the intensity of rufous coloration.
The species inhabits freshwater and tidal wetlands, rivers and streams bordered by trees, mangroves, coastal lagoons, estuaries, and urban parks and gardens with access to water. Unlike many herons, it shows considerable tolerance for urban and suburban environments, roosting in park trees and foraging in ornamental ponds and along urban waterways. It is colonial in its roosting behavior, often forming large communal roosts in trees.
The Nankeen Night-Heron is nocturnal and crepuscular, becoming active at dusk. It feeds on fish, frogs, insects, crustaceans, earthworms, and small mammals, foraging in shallow water and along the edges of wetlands. Prey is captured by standing motionless and striking with the bill. Breeding is colonial, with nests of sticks placed in trees or shrubs near water. Clutches of two to five eggs are incubated by both parents for 21–22 days.
The species is listed as Least Concern globally and is locally common and widespread, with stable populations across most of its range.
