About
A small Phasianidae spurfowl (~255 g) of rocky scrub, dry deciduous forest, and boulder-strewn hillsides across peninsular India. Males are boldly white-spotted on rich chestnut. Well camouflaged among rocks. Feeds on seeds and invertebrates. Pairs or small groups; calls loudly at dusk. Least Concern.

Plumage
Male black and chestnut with bold white spots on breast and flanks; rufous-chestnut crown; red facial skin. Female brown with white shaft streaks and pale spotting; less vivid markings than male.
