About
A small Phasianidae partridge (~264 g) endemic to bamboo forests and secondary woodland of Taiwan. Very similar to the Chinese Bamboo-partridge but considered a distinct island species based on vocalisations and genetics. Gregarious; feeds on seeds and invertebrates. Locally abundant; Least Concern.

Plumage
Similar to Chinese Bamboo-partridge but warmer toned; richer chestnut on flanks and breast; brown upperparts with olive tinge; grey supercilium; rufous tail; white belly. Endemic to Taiwan; sexes similar.

Geographic Range
Endemic to Taiwan; resident of bamboo thickets, secondary scrub, and forest edge from lowlands to 2,300 m.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous; eats seeds, berries, and invertebrates in Taiwan's bamboo forests and scrubby hillsides.

Song
Loud, rattling 'ji-ji-ji-JERK' calls; Taiwan endemic similar to Chinese Bamboo-partridge but louder with distinct inflection. Alarm is rapid cackle. Common in Taiwan mountain bamboo.
