التعريف
A bird whose presence or health reflects broader environmental conditions or ecosystem integrity.
شرح مفصل
Birds are the most widely used indicator species in ecological monitoring because they are conspicuous, easily surveyed, occupy multiple trophic levels, and respond rapidly to environmental change. Farmland bird indices track declines in agricultural habitat quality; woodland bird indices reflect forest structural condition; waterbird counts monitor wetland health. In the UK, the farmland bird index — showing a 57% decline since 1970 — is a legally mandated indicator of sustainable development.
