A dull, female-like plumage worn briefly by male ducks after breeding while they replace flight feathers.

Eclipse plumage occurs because ducks undergo a simultaneous (synchronous) molt of all flight feathers after breeding, leaving them flightless for 3-4 weeks. The simultaneous wing feather molt necessitates a concealing, female-like body plumage for predator avoidance during this vulnerable period. In most dabbling ducks the eclipse is worn July-September; by late autumn males regain their full breeding plumage. The speculum (wing patch) retains its color throughout, providing a reliable identification feature even during eclipse.
