Red Phalarope

Red Phalarope: 20–22 cm, offshore phalarope with a thick bill; breeding female has brick-red underparts and black cap. Breeds on High Arctic tundra; winters at sea, primarily in upwelling zones off west coasts of Africa and South America. Spins to concentrate zooplankton at surface. Polyandrous; males incubate. Long-distance oceanic migrant.

Sulawesi Woodcock

Sulawesi Woodcock: 32–36 cm, woodcock endemic to montane forest of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Nocturnal with cryptic brown plumage. Inhabits mossy forest above 1,000 m; probes leaf litter and soft soil for invertebrates. NT. Threatened by logging and agricultural conversion of highland forest. Sedentary island endemic.
