About These Birds
Chilean Pigeon
Medium-large pigeon, 30–35 cm, dark brownish-grey with a vinaceous-pink breast and a pale grey head. Endemic to the temperate forests and woodland edges of Chile and adjacent Argentina, including the Araucaria (monkey-puzzle) forest zone. Frugivore and granivore feeding on Araucaria seeds, berries, and fruits. Least Concern.
Rock Pigeon
The rock pigeon is the ancestor of all domestic pigeon breeds and one of the most abundant birds in cities worldwide. Pigeons have served humans as messengers, food, and subjects for scientific research — their homing ability and vision have been studied extensively. Darwin's study of pigeon breeding contributed to his theory of evolution.
