About These Birds
Salvin's Prion
25–28 cm, wingspan 57–63 cm. Similar to Broad-billed Prion but bill intermediate in width; blue-grey above with dark W-wing mark. Breeds Crozet and Marion islands in Indian Ocean. Feeds on crustaceans by filter-seizing at surface. Distinguished from congeners mainly by bill width.
Antarctic Petrel
40–46 cm, wingspan 100–110 cm. Striking chocolate-brown and white pattern; only member of its genus. Breeds solely in Antarctica on cliff ledges; among the most southerly-nesting birds. Feeds on fish and krill beneath pack ice. Returns to colonies in October; one of the most abundant Antarctic seabirds.
