Quail-plover (Ortyxelos meiffrenii) is a tiny 10–11 cm shorebird-like bird of arid African savannas, sole member of family Turnicidae's outgroup and sometimes placed in Thinocoridae. Extremely cryptic pale sandy plumage with dark streaks; black and white wing pattern in flight.

Little Buttonquail (Turnix velox) is a tiny 12–15 cm buttonquail endemic to Australia. Pale sandy-brown with fine dark streaking; white eye; swift runner. Inhabits open dry grasslands, gibber plains, and mulga scrub across arid interior Australia. Highly nomadic, following rainfall. The smallest Australian buttonquail. Polyandrous.
