About These Birds

Pink Pigeon

Stocky Mascarene pigeon, 36–38 cm, with pale pinkish-brown plumage, white forehead, and red bill and eye-ring. Confined to Mauritius's native forests. Reduced to just 10 individuals in the 1980s; an intensive conservation programme involving captive breeding raised numbers to 400–500 birds. Frugivore of native forest fruits. Vulnerable.

Adamawa Turtle-dove

Medium dove, 27–30 cm, with warm rufous-brown upperparts, a black neck collar, and a deep orange-red breast. Endemic to the highland plateaus and montane grasslands of northern Nigeria and Cameroon. Granivore of grass seeds and cultivated grains. Poorly studied and localised range. Least Concern.
