About These Birds
Northern Giant Petrel
80–95 cm, wingspan 150–200 cm. Resembles Southern Giant Petrel but bill tip is reddish-brown; lacks white morph. Breeds subantarctic islands (South Georgia, Macquarie, Auckland). Ranges north into subtropics; scavenges offal and carrion at sea. Near Threatened due to longline bycatch.
Heinroth's Shearwater
27 cm. Small dark shearwater; all sooty-brown with pale bill. Breeds Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Critically Endangered; extremely poorly known with only a handful of records. Breeding biology almost completely unknown; one of the rarest and least-studied seabirds.
