About These Birds
Crozet Shag
63 cm. Black above; white below; orange-yellow caruncles; blue eye-ring. Endemic to Crozet Islands, southern Indian Ocean. Vulnerable with small total population. Feeds on fish and invertebrates in cold Crozet Island waters. Colonial nester on coastal cliffs.
Bank Cormorant
76 cm. Dark sooty-brown; bare-faced; yellow at gape. Endemic to South Africa and Namibia coast; Near Threatened. Breeds on rocky islands and coastal cliffs. Feeds on fish in the cold Benguela upwelling. Does not venture far from breeding colonies; very restricted coastal range.
