About These Birds
Rough-faced Shag
65–70 cm. Black above; white below; prominent orange-red facial caruncles. Endemic to Cook Strait area, New Zealand. Vulnerable; small fragmented population. Feeds on fish and invertebrates in coastal waters. Colonial nester on cliff ledges; distinct from other New Zealand shags.
Pelagic Cormorant
63–73 cm. Small, slim cormorant; entirely glossy green-black; narrow bill; slender neck. Breeds along Pacific coasts from Baja California to NE Russia on rocky cliffs. Feeds on small fish in kelp beds. Least gregarious North Pacific cormorant; nests in small scattered groups.
