About These Birds

Band-rumped Storm-petrel, 19–21 cm, breeds on Atlantic and Pacific volcanic islands including the Azores, Canaries, and Galápagos. Sooty brown with a white rump band; similar to Leach's but straighter wingtips and steadier flight. Multiple cryptic species may be involved. Planktivore; widespread pelagic.

Matsudaira's Storm-petrel

Matsudaira's Storm-petrel, 24–26 cm, is a large, all-dark storm-petrel breeding on Volcano and Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Long-winged, slow flapping flight. Winters off East Africa and the Arabian Sea — an Indian Ocean migrant from North Pacific colonies. Planktivore and surface feeder.
