About These Birds

Band-rumped Storm-petrel

Band-rumped Storm-petrel, 19–21 cm, breeds on Atlantic and Pacific volcanic islands including the Azores, Canaries, and Galápagos. Sooty brown with a white rump band; similar to Leach's but straighter wingtips and steadier flight. Multiple cryptic species may be involved. Planktivore; widespread pelagic.

Guadalupe Storm-petrel

Guadalupe Storm-petrel, 22–23 cm, is Critically Endangered — possibly extinct; no confirmed sightings since the 1930s when cats eliminated the colony on Guadalupe Island. Large, all-dark storm-petrel very similar to Black Storm-petrel. Status uncertain; intensive searches have not relocated any individuals.
