About These Birds
Western Crowned-pigeon
Magnificent large pigeon, 66–73 cm, with blue-grey plumage, a maroon breast, and an elaborate fan-shaped white-tipped crest. Found in lowland rainforest of western New Guinea (Vogelkop and surrounding areas). Terrestrial frugivore of fallen fruits, seeds, and invertebrates. Vulnerable due to hunting for meat and feathers and deforestation.

The rock pigeon is the ancestor of all domestic pigeon breeds and one of the most abundant birds in cities worldwide. Pigeons have served humans as messengers, food, and subjects for scientific research — their homing ability and vision have been studied extensively.
