About These Birds
Southern Rockhopper Penguin
Southern Rockhopper Penguin, 45–58 cm, breeds on Falkland Islands and southern South American sub-Antarctic islands. Characteristic yellow plume starts above the eye, vivid red eyes and bill. Leaps with both feet together over boulders. Krill and fish feeder; dives to 100 m. Vulnerable; declining populations.
Royal Penguin
Royal Penguin, 65–76 cm, breeds exclusively on Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean. Like Macaroni Penguin but with a white (not black) face — the most obvious distinction. Crested penguin; krill and fish feeder. Vulnerable; breeds in one of the world's largest seabird colonies (~800,000 pairs).
