How to Tell Them Apart

Crested Bobwhite

Male has bushy rufous crest, white supercilium, black-streaked white face and throat, rufous-brown back, and buff underparts spotted black. Female is buff-brown with streaked body and smaller crest.

Nahan's Partridge

Dark brown overall, finely barred and streaked buff; underparts paler brown with buff streaking; bare reddish eye-ring; tail short and rufous; sexes similar. Forest floor cryptic coloration.

About These Birds

Crested Bobwhite

A small New World quail (~130 g) of family Odontophoridae, males with a shaggy brown-white crest. Inhabits open savanna, grassland, scrubland, and agricultural areas in Central America and northern South America. Forages in coveys for seeds and invertebrates on the ground. Least Concern; one of the most widespread bobwhite species, tolerant of human-modified landscapes.

Nahan's Partridge

A small partridge (~280 g) of family Odontophoridae, dark reddish-brown with black barring. Endemic to lowland primary rainforest in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Highly terrestrial, foraging on the forest floor for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Vulnerable; requires intact primary forest and is threatened by widespread logging and agricultural conversion in Central Africa.
