About These Birds

Spectacled Guillemot

Spectacled Guillemot, 36–38 cm, breeds on rocky coasts and sea cliffs of the western North Pacific from Kamchatka to Japan. Sooty black with white spectacle patches around the eye; red feet. Coastal diver; feeds on fish and crustaceans near rocky reefs. Sedentary; stays close to breeding coast year-round.

Rhinoceros Auklet

Rhinoceros Auklet, 37–41 cm, breeds colonially in burrows on North Pacific islands from California to Japan. Adults develop a prominent horn at bill base in breeding plumage plus white facial plumes. Nocturnal at colonies. Piscivore; dives up to 50 m for sand lance and herring. Winters at sea.
