Small; mostly black head, neck, and breast. Small white neck-patch on adults. Back dark brownish-gray; belly pale gray to white depending on subspecies. White undertail coverts. Sexes similar.

Iridescent dark green head with white forehead blaze. Black and white barred flanks; rufous breast; white belly. White forewing patch. Legs blue-gray. Females similar but duller. South American temperate species.

Brent Goose

A small dark-bodied goose with a black head and neck, small white neck patches, and pale grey belly. Migrates between high-Arctic breeding grounds and temperate coastal wintering areas. Feeds on eel-grass and saltmarsh vegetation in winter. Three subspecies differ in belly coloration.

Chiloe Wigeon

A large boldly patterned wigeon with a metallic green head, white face, black breast, grey flanks with white barring, and a bright orange-yellow bill. Endemic to southern South America. Highly territorial; pairs defend lake territories. Named for Chiloé Island in Chile.
