About These Birds

New Zealand Scaup

A small compact all-dark diving duck with a yellow eye in males, known in New Zealand as the 'black teal.' Endemic to New Zealand. The only native diving duck still widespread on both main islands. Gregarious; forms large flocks on deep mountain lakes.

Black Swan

The black swan was once considered impossible by Europeans who believed all swans were white, making it a famous philosophical example of inductive reasoning failure. It is the state emblem of Western Australia. Black swans form lifelong pair bonds and both parents share in incubation and care of cygnets.
