Loud 'chuck-chuck-CHUKAR' calls from European alpine scree; similar to Chukar but slightly higher-pitched. Alarm is rapid cackling when flushed from rocks. Males call from rocky perches at dawn.

Inhabits steep rocky slopes above 600 m. Feeds on seeds and plant material. Near Threatened from tourism pressure.
