Kagu, 55–60 cm, is New Caledonia's iconic flightless bird — the sole member of its family. Ghostly pale grey with a dramatic erectile crest, bright orange bill, and red legs. Inhabits dense humid montane forest; hunts invertebrates on the forest floor by sight. Endangered; predation by introduced animals.
