حول

The New Zealand Little Bittern (Ixobrychus novaezelandiae) is an extinct species of small heron belonging to the family Ardeidae, formerly endemic to the North Island, South Island, and possibly other islands of New Zealand. Known from subfossil bones and a small number of specimens collected in the nineteenth century, this bittern appears to have been similar in general structure to other small Ixobrychus bitterns but with plumage that reportedly differed from its congeners, showing more brownish and streaked tones. It was a small, compact heron of approximately 25–35 cm in length.

The New Zealand Little Bittern inhabited freshwater swamps, reedbeds, and dense wetland vegetation, consistent with the habitat preferences of related Ixobrychus species throughout the world. Fossil evidence and historical accounts indicate it was once present across both main islands of New Zealand. Like other members of the genus, it presumably foraged for small fish, frogs, insects, and other aquatic invertebrates in shallow water and dense emergent vegetation, climbing through reed stems with elongate toes adapted for grasping vertical stems.

The species likely went extinct following European colonization of New Zealand during the nineteenth century, though its final disappearance may have begun with Polynesian settlement and the associated introduction of rats (kiore) several centuries earlier. The combination of wetland drainage for agriculture and settlement, introduction of mammalian predators including rats, mustelids, and cats, and possibly direct hunting contributed to its extinction. The last confirmed specimen is believed to date to the 1890s or earlier.

No eggs, nest, or detailed behavioral observations were recorded before the species was lost. What is known of the species is largely derived from skeletal remains and brief museum specimen records. The New Zealand Little Bittern serves as a reminder of the substantial extinction debt incurred across New Zealand's avifauna following human arrival, which destroyed populations of many endemic birds adapted to a predator-free island environment.

This species is now classified as Extinct by the IUCN, along with numerous other New Zealand endemic birds lost since human colonization of the islands.
