A medium-sized owlet-nightjar (22-24 cm) found in montane forests of the Vogelkop Peninsula (Bird's Head) of western New Guinea. Dark brown barred plumage. Nocturnal insectivore. Recently recognized as a distinct species, separated from Barred Owlet-nightjar. Limited ecological data.

Dark grey-brown upperparts with darker barring; underparts pale buff barred dark brown; facial disc with dark border; restricted to Vogelkop Peninsula, New Guinea; slightly darker and greyer than allied Mountain Owlet-nightjar.
Habitat & Range

Endemic to the Vogelkop Peninsula of western New Guinea. Found in lowland and hill forest. Range and habits poorly understood from few specimens.
Diet & Feeding
Nocturnal insectivore feeding on beetles, moths, and ants; hunts with short aerial sallies and ground-gleaning.
