About These Birds

Tristan Albatross

Tristan Albatross, 100–110 cm, wingspan 250–300 cm, breeds only on Gough Island in the South Atlantic — one of the world's most isolated islands. Critically Endangered; mouse predation on eggs and chicks is causing severe decline. Pelagic across the South Atlantic; piscivore and squid feeder.

Southern Royal Albatross

Southern Royal Albatross, 107–122 cm, wingspan up to 350 cm — among the longest of any bird. Breeds on Campbell and Auckland Islands; circumnavigates the Southern Ocean in 30–80 days. White body, dark upperwing becoming whiter with age. Piscivore and cephalopod feeder. Vulnerable; threatened by longline fishing.
