About These Birds
Mascarene Coot
Mascarene Coot (Fulica newtonii) is an extinct giant coot formerly inhabiting Mauritius and Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Larger than Eurasian Coot; likely flightless or near-flightless. Extirpated by hunting and introduced predators in the 17th–18th centuries. Known from subfossil remains and written accounts by early European visitors.
Red-fronted Coot
Red-fronted Coot (Fulica rufifrons) is a 36–42 cm coot of South America's Andean and southern marshes, from Argentina and Chile north to Bolivia. All-black plumage with a conspicuous bright red frontal shield and white bill. Inhabits large open freshwater lakes with reed margins. Feeds on aquatic vegetation by diving and dabbling. Locally common.
