About These Birds
Tristan Albatross
Tristan Albatross, 100–110 cm, wingspan 250–300 cm, breeds only on Gough Island in the South Atlantic — one of the world's most isolated islands. Critically Endangered; mouse predation on eggs and chicks is causing severe decline. Pelagic across the South Atlantic; piscivore and squid feeder.
Grey-headed Albatross
Grey-headed Albatross, 81 cm, wingspan 220 cm, breeds on South Georgia and other Southern Ocean islands. Grey head, black-and-yellow bill, white body. Holds record for fastest level bird flight — 127 km/h recorded. Endangered; declining due to longline bycatch. Circumnavigates the Southern Ocean when not breeding.
