About These Birds
Tristan Albatross
Tristan Albatross, 100–110 cm, wingspan 250–300 cm, breeds only on Gough Island in the South Atlantic — one of the world's most isolated islands. Critically Endangered; mouse predation on eggs and chicks is causing severe decline. Pelagic across the South Atlantic; piscivore and squid feeder.
Laysan Albatross
Laysan Albatross, 79–81 cm, wingspan 195–203 cm, breeds mainly at Midway Atoll in the North Pacific; the world's largest colony. White body, dark back and upperwing, pink bill. Long-lived; a female named Wisdom, over 70 years old, still breeds. Threatened by lead paint ingestion, plastic, and longline bycatch.
